Poker originates from several games, but hardly anybody knows these games. Poker can be based on one of the Chinese or Persian card games. According to some books and dictionaries the game came from France. In the USA the game of Poker originated from New Orleans and spread along the riverboats that traveled the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. At the beginning of the 19th century the game was extremely popular, but it differed from the modern version of the game. During the civil war other Poker variations appeared and they were very popular. Such Poker variations as Stud, Draw, Straight Poker appeared and they were played by millions of gamblers. New Poker variations such as Stud, Draw and Straight Pokers enjoyed wide popularity during the Wild West period of the US history. Poker is the only casino game, in which players play against each other, but not against the house. Poker has many variations, although the rules of play and strategy differ, the hierarchy of winning hands remains the same. Nowadays Poker is played all over the world.
